Designing tap to pay acceptance interactions for enterprise merchants

JPMorgan is building a white-labeled tap-to-pay integration for merchants to conduct contactless payments with just an Android phone.

Collecting the tap is difficult for merchants because NFC chips are located on the back of Android phones. This results in confusion when the customer tries to tap their card or phone.

Designed a full tap-to-pay experience that not only integrates with an existing merchant POS system, but also clearly communicates how to facilitate the tap interaction.

Early concepts explored how to orient the merchant, surface the NFC zone, and signal progress through the tap without adding friction at checkout.

Designing for launch

When deciding a final direction to take for our pilot experience, I worked with Product and Engineering to balance tech constraints with business objectives. We decided to keep the standard multi-dot reader animation, static phone illustration to convey the desired interaction, and JPM seal to maintain a competitive edge.
